1. Story of Mother’s Day
The traditional practice of honoring the spirit of motherhood has its roots in the antiquity. History stands testimony to the fact that our ancestors showed great spirituality and symbolism by celebrating the symbols of the motherhood and the Goddesses whom they worshipped rather than the real mothers. The objects that were adored ranged from the Christian Church to the female deities.
The family orientation of the Mother’s Day is a phenomenon of the contemporary times. It was only in the last few centuries that the celebrations of the Mother’s Day took a human focus and it took a commercial overtone in the last century itself.

1.1. Mothers Day- Historical Heralds
When we talk about the ancient times, the celebration of motherhood can be mapped to the Greek and the Roman civilizations which celebrated the festivals of motherhood in the honor of the Goddesses Cybele and Rhea. The modern precedent of this honor was started in the form of a Christian festival named as “Mothering Sunday’.
This celebration was considered as a major tradition in the European parts and the UK and was observed on the 4th Sunday in Lent. The day was celebrated in honor to signify the time when the loyal servants and devotes would return to their true mother or the Mother Church for doing a special service for the church.
As the time changed, the tradition of the Mothering Sunday was transitioned into a more profane holiday wherein the children would present their mothers with lots of gifts, flowers and other tokens of love. As the time passed, this custom became unpopular before getting merged in the year 1940 with the American Mother’s Day.

1.2 Mother’s Day- Celebration in The 19th Century
The initiation of the American Mother’s Day can be traced back to the 19th century. Prior to the Civil War i.e. in the year 1861-1865, a lady named Ann Reeves Jarvis initiated the “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” with an aim to teach the women for taking care of their children.
All such clubs united the different regions in the country that was divided due to the Civil War. In the year 1868, Jarves found a day named as “Mother’s Friendship Day”. This day was celebrated by gathering the former soldiers of the Confederate and the Union soldiers for promoting the reconciliation. What to do on mothers day?

1.3 Mother’s Day- Official Proclamation by Anna Jarvis
As a result of the continuous efforts of Ann Reeves Jarvis’ daughter Anna Jarvis, the holiday of the official Mother’s Day was started being observed in the 19th century. After the death of Ann Reeves, Anna Jarvis conceptualised the idea of Mother’s Day as a day to honour the sacrifices that mothers make for their children.
Once she was successful in getting financed from a businessman John Wanamaker, she organised the 1st Mother’s Day celebration in May 1908, in a Methodist Church in the West Virginia. The day was commemorated by thousands of people who came to attend this day.
Owing to the success of the 1st Mother’s Day, Jarvis made it her mission to add the holiday to the American calendar. She argued that since the majority of the American holidays used to be male centric; she started writing letters to the authorities. By the year 1912, the majority of the states and churches had already adopted Mother’s Day as a yearly holiday.
The efforts and patience of Jarvis paid off and in the year 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made an official announcement of observing the 2nd Sunday in May as the Mother’s Day.
1.4 Mother’s Day- Traditions & Celebrations
By the time Anna Jarvis died, over 40 countries were observing the Mother’s Day. In most of the countries, the culture of the United States in celebrating the Mother’s Day was not adapted with much enthusiasm. The countries whose traditions originate from the “Mothering Day” have the traditions that are different from the ones in the United States.
Moreover, the others have risen above the cultural and commercial adaptation of the Mother’s Day and focus more on the issues and rights of the women by celebrating International Women’s Day.
Whilst the US version of the Mother’s Day has its roots expanded in the secular humanist way it is has been followed by commercialisation up to a great extent and continues to tie it up with more religious and symbolic representation.

In Ethiopia, the day is observed by the families getting together and singing songs together. They have a huge feast and have a celebration that goes on for days in honor of this day.
In the United States, the day is continued to be celebrated by giving gifts, flowers and other tokens to the mothers and to the other women you want to respect and love. The children usually give their mothers a day free from the regular days and household chores like cooking, laundry, etc.
