When Is Grandparents Day?
– Sunday, September-10-2017
Some of the countries celebrate it separately as Grandmothers’ Day and Grandfathers’ Day, while some observe it on a single day for both the grandparents. Grandmothers’ Day was celebrated globally for the first time in Poland in year 1965.
Grandparents Day History
The Grandparents’ Day was first found by a lady named Marian McQuade form West Virginia. Along with her, a few more people hold the credit of being the founder of the National Grandparents Day. They were Jennings Randolph, Robert Byrd and then President Jimmy Carter.
Mrs. McQuade was aimed at educating the people (especially the youth) about the contribution of their seniors throughout the history. Mrs. McQuade had a feeling that nowadays the Grandparents don’t get the love they deserve from their next generation. Some are even sent to old age homes, thinking that the seniors are a big load on them.
Grandparents Day Ideas
The main purpose behind this idea of Mrs. McQuade was to honor grandparents, to give them an opportunity to exhibit their love towards the grandchildren, to aware the children about the strengths, information and guidance they can get from their grandparents.
Mrs. McQuade had a very huge family which consisted of 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. 60 years after their marriage, Mr. McQuade passed away in 2001, and after that Mrs. McQuade died in 2008.
Mrs. McQuade had wished the Grandparents Day to be like where all the members of a family will come together and spend a quality time with each other. In fact she had an idea of families should have a small kind of reunion.
Mrs. McQuade was elected as Vice-Chair of the West Virginia Committee on Aging in 1971and as a delegate to White House Conference on Aging. She has served in as the Vocational Rehabilitation Foundation, Vice-President of the West Virginia Health Systems Agency, and also was appointed to the Nursing Home Licensing Board.
She had also started a one-day campaign for honoring the grandparents. In 1978, the US President declared that the Sunday that falls after the Labor Day should be celebrated as Grandparents Day globally. Since then, every year the Sunday after Labor Day is observed as grandparents Day all over the globe.

Chain to our near-past:
Grandparents Day provides us an opportunity socially to strengthen the identity of our grandparents, to know their importance in our lives, to know the vital role they play in our family. Our Grandparents are the chain to our near-past.
They play a vital role in parenting and educating the children they also strengthen the family as they are the major building blocks. Not only this, but we also can set an example for our future generations regarding the relationship between the seniors and juniors of the family.
Grandparents are the most special ones for children in a family because they love them the way in which no one else can do it. They take special care of you and try to be there for you whenever in need of any help. No matter what is the situation, they’ll always be there by your side to support you by all means they can.
Grandparents like to play with their grandchildren they do it all the time getting to the level of small ones. These are the people who will always be holding our hand in order to lead us towards the right path, and will let us go alone.
Grandparents do scold their grandkids if they go wrong anywhere, just to keep them away from doing mistakes. They’ll also motivate us in our tough times and would help us in finding solutions to overcome the situation. Our grandparents will always try to inspire us and will forever be the ‘Wind beneath our Wings’.
What is Grandparents to us?
Our grandparents are the ones who have patience and time for us at the time when our parents are busy. They tell us some interesting stories, will play different games with us and have a lot of fun with us. They’ll sing lullabies to put us in a calm sleep. No one can replace our grandparents because the things they do for us, can’t be done by anyone else, no one else can ever give us the same amount of love we get from our grandparents.
